Dalyan Day Trip from Marmaris: River Boats, Mud Baths, Turtle Beach and Kaunos

Picture a small wooden boat gliding through tall reeds, a kingfisher darting across the water, and then, carved into the cliff above the river, the temple-fronted tombs of an ancient city. A few hours later you are covered head to toe in grey mud, laughing with strangers, before ending the day on a wide, empty beach where sea turtles come ashore to nest.
That is Dalyan, and it is one of the most varied days out you can have from here. It is also a long day with a lot of moving parts, and the tour on the poster is not always the tour you get. This guide explains how the trip works, what it costs in 2026 and the questions to ask before you hand over your money.

Is the Dalyan trip worth it?
Yes, if you want river scenery, a protected beach and a little history in one day. No, if what you really want is a slow day on the sand: the trip is busy, and each stop is shared out against the clock.
Two things I tell every visitor before they book. First, almost all standard tours show you the famous rock tombs from the river, not from inside the archaeological site of Kaunos. Second, inclusions vary a lot: the cheapest tour on the harbour may leave out lunch, the mud bath fee or the beach transfer. Read on and you will know what to check.
What you will see
The Dalyan River and the rock tombs of Kaunos
The river is the highlight for most people. Small boats wind through the reed beds of the delta, and on the cliff opposite the town of Dalyan you will see the rock-cut tombs of Kaunos, carved in the 4th century BC with temple-like façades. They are one of the most photographed sights on this coast.
For the history behind them, see our guide to the Carian rock tombs of Kaunos.
The mud baths
The mud baths are the comic interlude of the day. You lower yourself into a warm pool of grey mud, coat yourself from head to toe, let it dry in the sun until you look like a statue, then wash it off under showers and in a thermal pool. Many tour operators include the entry fee; check before booking.
Ignore any seller who claims the mud cures anything. Enjoy it for what it is: messy, sociable fun. Wear an old swimsuit, as the mud can stain light fabrics, and keep your phone in a waterproof bag.
İztuzu Beach (Turtle Beach)
İztuzu is a 4.5 km sandbar between the sea and the Dalyan delta, with fresh river water on one side and the Mediterranean on the other. It is one of the most important nesting beaches in Turkey for loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta), which is why access is controlled: the beach closes at night during the nesting season, and parts of it are fenced off to protect nests.
A turtle sighting is never guaranteed. The turtles people often spot from the boats in the river are frequently Nile softshell turtles, a different species. Stay out of marked nesting areas, do not touch or feed any wildlife, and take your rubbish with you.
Köyceğiz Lake
Some tours add a stop on Köyceğiz Lake, the large freshwater lake that feeds the Dalyan river. It is a calm, green contrast to the beach and the mud.
Kaunos ancient city
If you want to walk among the theatre, city walls, baths and temples of Kaunos, you need a tour that specifically includes the archaeological site, or you need to go independently. The site is reached from the river with a short crossing and a walk. Entry costs €3 (about $3.50) for foreign visitors; Turkish Museum Card holders enter with the card. Wear proper shoes; the ground is uneven.
By boat or by bus?
Tours from Marmaris come in two main formats:
| Format | How it works | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| By boat from Marmaris | A large boat leaves Marmaris harbour in the morning and sails along the coast to İztuzu; small river boats then take you up the delta | A longer day at sea; lovely if you enjoy boats |
| By bus | A coach collects you from your hotel and drives to Dalyan or Köyceğiz, where you board river boats | Faster road journey; less time on open water if you get seasick |
A typical boat-format day runs from hotel pick-up around 08:45-09:20, departure from the harbour at 09:30 and return to Marmaris around 19:30. Bus tours keep similar hours.
2026 prices
| Option | 2026 price | Approx. USD | Usually included |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget boat tour from Marmaris harbour | ~1,000 TL | ~$20 | Transfer, lunch, river boat, mud bath and beach entry; drinks extra |
| Standard group tour | ~1,200 TL | ~$24 | Transfer, lunch; drinks extra |
| Tour by boat or by bus (international booking sites) | 1,500-1,950 TL | $30-39 | Transfer, lunch, river boat, mud bath, entrance fees |
| Kaunos ancient city (if visiting inside) | €3 | ~$3.50 | Site entry only |
The cheapest price is not always the best value. Before comparing, check whether each price includes hotel pick-up, lunch, the river boat, İztuzu access and the mud bath fee. Drinks are almost always extra, so bring some cash.
Bookable options on our site include the Dalyan and İztuzu Beach tour by boat and the Turtle Beach tour with Köyceğiz Lake and mud baths.
A typical day
- Morning pick-up from your hotel in Marmaris or İçmeler. Some tours collect from several hotels, so be ready early.
- The journey by boat along the coast, or by coach (about 1 hour 15 minutes of driving, plus pick-ups and a break).
- Mud baths, usually 30-45 minutes including showers and the thermal pool.
- River boat through the reeds, past the rock tombs of Kaunos.
- Lunch in Dalyan or on board.
- İztuzu Beach, with free time to swim. The length of the stop varies.
- Optional Köyceğiz Lake stop on some tours.
- Return to Marmaris in the early evening.
Doing it independently
With a car, Dalyan is an easy drive. Park in Dalyan town, then use the river boat cooperative on the waterfront for the mud baths, the tombs and İztuzu, and pay entry fees at each site. This gives you time to visit Kaunos properly and to stay on the beach until late afternoon.
Without a car, it is possible by public transport (bus towards Ortaca, then a minibus to Dalyan), but with several changes it eats into your day. For most visitors staying in Marmaris, a group tour is simpler. If Kaunos matters to you, consider a night in Dalyan.
What to ask before booking
- Does the tour go inside Kaunos, or only pass the tombs by boat?
- Is it a boat or bus format, and what time is pick-up and return?
- Are lunch, the mud bath and İztuzu access included?
- Are drinks included, or paid on board?
- How long is the beach stop?
- Is there an extra charge for pick-up from hotels outside Marmaris and İçmeler?
- What is the child price and age limit?
- What is the cancellation policy if the weather changes?
What to bring
- An old swimsuit for the mud, plus a second one for the beach
- A towel, sunscreen, hat and sunglasses
- A change of clothes and a plastic bag for wet, muddy items
- A waterproof pouch for your phone
- Cash for drinks, photos and tips
- Sandals for the boats, and walking shoes if you plan to visit Kaunos
