Where to Stay in Marmaris: Centre vs İçmeler vs Turunç, Compared by a Local

The question that shapes a holiday here more than any other is not which hotel, but which bay. Three bases sit within half an hour of each other, yet they feel like three different holidays: the busy, walkable town centre, the calmer family resort of İçmeler, and Turunç, a small bay tucked behind a mountain.
After nine years of living here, I have noticed that the thing visitors overlook is not the beach or the hotel, but the journey back in the evening. From İçmeler, it is a short, frequent bus ride. From Turunç, it is a winding mountain road with the last bus leaving early in the evening. Get that part right and almost any hotel will work.

Marmaris centre: for convenience and variety
The centre is the easiest base if you want to mix plans without arranging transport every time. The marina, castle and old town, the bazaar, hundreds of restaurants, the boat trip departure points and the Rhodes ferry are all within walking distance. It is also the most practical choice for a short stay, a late arrival or a trip without a car.
“Central Marmaris” covers several quite different stays:
- Old town and marina: ideal for restaurants, sightseeing and evening walks. Some streets are close to Bar Street and can be loud until the early hours in July and August.
- Uzunyalı: right on the promenade and the beach, with cafés and restaurants on the doorstep. Busy in summer, but you can walk into town along the sea.
- Siteler: further west, with many larger hotels and their own beach sections. The walk to the marina is longer than most people expect, so a bus or taxi becomes part of the routine.
If nightlife is not your priority, check how far the hotel is from Bar Street on the map and read recent reviews mentioning noise.
Choose the centre if you want walkable evenings, the widest choice of restaurants, easy access to boat trips and the least complicated holiday without a car.
İçmeler: for an easy beach holiday
İçmeler sits in its own bay, about 13 km by road from the centre, with pine-covered mountains rising straight behind the beach. The beach is wide and the water stays shallow for a long way, which is why so many families come back year after year. A promenade links the hotels, shops and restaurants along the seafront, and the evenings are noticeably calmer than in town.
Getting to the centre is easy. Buses 10-1A and 10-1B run frequently along the coast, and the 2026 fare is 42 TL (about $0.85) one way with an electronic card. A taxi back from town late at night costs around 400-500 TL ($8-10). In summer, a water taxi also connects İçmeler with the Marmaris harbour.
The trade-off is small but real: if you plan to go into town for dinner every night, the bus rides and late taxis add up. For most families, İçmeler is the best middle ground between a beach holiday and easy access to everything else.
Choose İçmeler if you want a beach-led stay, a relaxed evening pace and a simple connection to town. For a week-long family holiday, it is often the easiest choice.
Turunç: for a slower, quieter escape
Turunç feels like a different kind of holiday. It is a small bay framed by steep, forested hills, with the beach and a handful of streets at its heart. Once the day boats leave in the late afternoon, the village becomes very peaceful. Many visitors spend almost their whole holiday here, swimming, eating by the water and walking up to the ancient city of Amos.
Distance is what you need to plan around. The bus route from Marmaris is 22 km over a winding mountain road with beautiful views. Bus 10-15 leaves Marmaris roughly every hour from 08:00 to 22:00 in season, but the last bus back from Turunç leaves at around 20:30, so dinner in town usually means a taxi home. In summer, a water taxi runs from Marmaris every half hour between 10:00 and 19:00 and takes about 45 minutes to reach Turunç harbour; it is the most pleasant way to arrive.
There are fewer hotels and restaurants than in the bigger resorts, so book early for July and August. Turunç is also less practical for very early flights from Dalaman.
Choose Turunç if the bay itself is the point of your holiday and you value peace and scenery over variety and late nights.
2026 hotel prices
Hotel prices depend far more on the dates, the type of hotel and the meal plan than on the area. Across Marmaris as a whole, the average nightly rate for two adults (before taxes and fees) changes dramatically through the year:
| Month | Avg. per night (USD) | Approx. TL |
|---|---|---|
| May | $72 | ~3,550 TL |
| June | $111 | ~5,500 TL |
| July | $144 | ~7,150 TL |
| August | $140 | ~6,950 TL |
| September | $123 | ~6,100 TL |
| October | $95 | ~4,700 TL |
For a sense of entry-level prices in each area, in mid-October 2026 a simple double room for one night, taxes included, started from around:
| Area | From (USD) | Approx. TL |
|---|---|---|
| Marmaris centre | ~$51 | ~2,500 TL |
| İçmeler | ~$76 | ~3,750 TL |
| Turunç | ~$58 | ~2,850 TL |
These are starting prices on specific dates, not proof that one area is always cheaper. A room-only apartment, a beachfront hotel and an all-inclusive resort are very different products even when the nightly price looks similar. Compare the total for your exact dates, including meals, transfers, daily transport and cancellation terms.
Getting there from Dalaman Airport
All three bases are about 1.5 hours from Dalaman Airport. A taxi costs around 3,500 TL ($71) to the centre and 3,750 TL ($76) to İçmeler. The Havaş airport bus (420 TL / about $8.50) stops at the Marmaris bus station, so from İçmeler or Turunç you will need a second bus or a taxi. For late arrivals, especially to Turunç, a pre-booked private transfer is the least stressful option. Full details are in our guide on how to get to Marmaris.
Other areas worth knowing
- Armutalan: inland behind the centre, with lower prices and many apartments. Good for longer stays if you do not mind a walk or short bus ride to the beach.
- Selimiye and Bozburun: village bases on the peninsula, an hour or more away. Wonderful for total peace, but a car is almost essential.
Which base is right for you?
- First visit: the centre if you want to explore; İçmeler if swimming and resort time come first.
- Families with young children: İçmeler, for its shallow beach and facilities. Check the hotel’s actual beach access.
- Nightlife: the centre, so you can walk home.
- A quiet couple’s escape: Turunç, if you are happy with fewer evening options.
- No car: the centre or İçmeler. Turunç works if you plan around the bus and water taxi.
- A short break of two or three nights: the centre saves the most time.
A local’s booking checklist
- Check the map pin, not the resort name. A hotel listed as “Marmaris” may be in Siteler, Armutalan, İçmeler or even Turunç.
- Plan your evening return. This matters most in İçmeler and Turunç if you want dinners or nights out in town.
- Ask what “beachfront” means. It can mean a public beach across the promenade, a hotel platform or a private section with separate sunbed charges.
- Check seasonal opening dates. Many hotels, pools, beach businesses and water taxis run only from spring to autumn.
- Compare the full cost. A cheaper room further out may cost more once you add transfers, meals and daily transport.
Frequently asked questions
Is it better to stay in Marmaris or İçmeler? For a beach-focused family holiday, İçmeler is usually the easier choice. For sightseeing, nightlife and variety on foot, the centre wins.
Is Turunç too far from Marmaris? Not if you want a quiet bay holiday and plan to spend most of your time locally. It feels far if you expect to go into town every day or come back late at night; the last bus leaves Turunç at around 20:30.
Can I stay in İçmeler without a car? Yes. Buses run frequently between İçmeler and the centre all day in summer, for 42 TL ($0.85) a trip.
Which area has the best beach? İçmeler is the best all-rounder for families; Turunç has clearer water in a smaller cove; the centre offers the longest stretch of beach and promenade, with conditions varying along its length. See our guide to the best beaches in Marmaris.
Which area is cheapest? There is no consistent winner. Dates, hotel type and meal plan matter far more than the area. Armutalan has plenty of budget apartments for longer stays.
Should I split my stay? On a longer trip it can work well: a few nights in the centre for exploring, then a few quiet nights in Turunç. For a week or less, one well-chosen base is simpler.
