Datça Day Trip from Marmaris: Old Town, Beaches and Knidos

Head west from Marmaris and the landscape slowly changes. The pine forests give way to almond and olive groves, the road narrows along a peninsula barely a kilometre wide in places, and the Aegean appears on one side and the Mediterranean on the other. At the end of it lies Datça: a relaxed harbour town, a hillside village of stone houses and bougainvillea, and, right at the tip, the ruins of Knidos, one of the great cities of the ancient world.
It looks close on the map, and it is: about 72 km by road. But the peninsula is long and winding, and its highlights are spread out. The most common mistake I see is trying to squeeze everything into a single day. This guide shows you how to get there, what is worth seeing, and two itineraries that actually work, with 2026 prices.

Is a Datça day trip worth it?
Yes, if you enjoy a scenic drive and a slower pace than Marmaris. Datça has a different feel altogether: fewer big hotels, no Bar Street, and a strong local identity built on almonds, olive oil, honey and the sea. Eski Datça, the old village, is lovely for a gentle morning. The town adds a harbour, seafood restaurants and easy swimming. Knidos, at the far western tip, deserves at least half a day on its own.
My advice: decide in advance whether your day is about history (Knidos) or about atmosphere and swimming (Eski Datça and the beaches). If you want both without rushing, stay a night.
How to get from Marmaris to Datça
By bus (MUTTAŞ 48-16)
The municipal bus runs between Marmaris bus station and Datça bus station, covering about 72 km. The fare is 229 TL (about $4.60) each way with an electronic card, or 458 TL ($9.25) return. Cards are accepted on board.
| Weekdays | Weekends | |
|---|---|---|
| From Marmaris | Hourly from 09:00 to 16:00, then 16:45, 17:45, 18:45, 19:45 and 21:00 | Hourly from 09:00 to 18:00, then 19:00 and 21:00 |
| From Datça | Hourly from 06:00 to 17:00, then 19:00 | Hourly from 07:00 to 17:00, then 19:00 |
The last bus back from Datça leaves at around 19:00, so plan your day around it. Timetables change during the year; check the MUTTAŞ website for your date.
The bus is perfect for Datça town and Eski Datça. It is not a good way to reach Knidos: the onward minibus from Datça runs only a few times a day, and connections are tight. For Knidos, use a car or a private driver.
By car
Driving gives you the freedom to stop at viewpoints, beaches and Knidos. The road is good but winding, especially on the final stretch to Knidos, which is narrow and slow. Allow about 1 hour 15 minutes to Datça town and another 45 minutes to an hour to Knidos. Fill up with fuel in Marmaris or Datça; there are few options near the tip of the peninsula.
What to see
Eski Datça (Old Datça)
Just above the modern town, Eski Datça is a village of restored stone houses, cobbled lanes, bougainvillea and small cafés. It is the most photogenic spot on the peninsula and best enjoyed slowly: a Turkish breakfast in a courtyard, a wander through the lanes, a look in the craft shops. The much-loved Turkish poet Can Yücel lived in Datça for many years and is buried here; his house in Eski Datça is one of the village’s best-known landmarks.
Go early in summer, before the lanes fill up and the heat builds, and wear shoes with grip on the polished cobbles.
Datça town and its beaches
The town centre wraps around a small harbour lined with fish restaurants and cafés. Three beaches are within easy reach:
- Kumluk: a sandy town beach right by the centre; the easiest option without a car.
- Taşlık: a pebble beach on the other side of the harbour, with clear water and a more local feel.
- Kargı: a little further out, a wide bay with beach clubs and very clear water.
The peninsula is famously windy, which keeps the water fresh and clear but can make some bays choppy in the afternoon. Bring water shoes for pebbly entries, and check whether a stretch has paid sunbeds before you settle in.
Knidos ancient city
At Cape Tekir, where the Aegean meets the Mediterranean, Knidos was one of the wealthiest cities of the ancient Greek world. It was laid out on a grid plan and terraced into the hillside, with two harbours, one on each side of a narrow isthmus. The city was famous for its wine and for the statue of Aphrodite by Praxiteles, one of the most celebrated sculptures of antiquity.
Highlights include the Great and Small Theatres, the round temple terrace believed to have housed the Aphrodite statue, the sanctuary of Demeter, the Apollo terrace and the ancient harbour street. The site is large and exposed, so allow at least two hours, bring water and a hat, and wear sturdy shoes.
Tickets and hours: entry costs €5 (about $5.60) for foreign visitors; Turkish citizens use the Museum Card. Knidos is open every day from 08:30 to 18:00, with the ticket office closing at 17:30. Many finds from Knidos are displayed in the Marmaris Castle museum. For more on the site, see our Knidos guide.
Palamutbükü
On the road to Knidos, Palamutbükü is a quiet bay with a long pebble beach and a handful of fish restaurants. It makes a perfect lunch and swim stop on a Knidos day.
Two realistic itineraries
Option 1: Eski Datça, the town and a swim (works by bus)
- Take the 09:00 or 10:00 bus from Marmaris.
- Head up to Eski Datça for breakfast and an unhurried walk through the lanes.
- Walk or take a taxi down to the town for lunch at the harbour.
- Spend the afternoon at Kumluk or Taşlık beach.
- Catch a late-afternoon bus back, leaving a margin before the last departure at 19:00.
Option 2: Knidos and Palamutbükü (by car)
- Leave Marmaris by 08:00 and drive straight to Knidos, arriving as it opens and before the heat.
- Spend two to three hours exploring the site.
- Stop at Palamutbükü for a fish lunch and a swim.
- If time and energy allow, make a short stop in Eski Datça on the way back.
Restaurants are scarce near Knidos itself, so plan lunch for the return leg.
2026 costs
| Item | 2026 price | Approx. USD |
|---|---|---|
| Bus Marmaris-Datça, one way (electronic card) | 229 TL | ~$4.60 |
| Bus Marmaris-Datça, return | 458 TL | ~$9.25 |
| Knidos entry (foreign visitors) | €5 | ~$5.60 |
| Eski Datça and the town beaches | Free | Free |
Restaurant prices in Datça are broadly similar to Marmaris: a simple lunch costs around 300-550 TL ($6-11), while fish at the harbour or in Palamutbükü is priced by weight and costs considerably more. For a detailed breakdown of food and drink prices, see our guide to Marmaris holiday costs.
What to buy in Datça
The peninsula is famous for its almonds, along with olive oil and thyme honey. Small shops in Eski Datça and the town sell almonds in every form, from roasted and salted to almond paste and sweets. They make a light, local gift; for more ideas, see what to buy in Marmaris.
Practical tips
- Check both legs of the journey and save the return bus times before you leave.
- Choose one priority. Knidos plus Eski Datça plus several beaches is too much for one relaxed day.
- Carry water and sun protection. Knidos has very little shade.
- Bring a card and some cash. Most places accept cards, but small shops and beach kiosks may not.
- Expect wind. Bring a light layer, even in summer, and plan swims for the morning.
- Leave a margin. Do not plan a tight dinner booking or a flight on the evening of your trip.
